Soko Friedhof: "Die Geschichte eines Werwolfs" (2002)
  
An obscure album by an obscure German "band", or rather: a side project by David A. Line, one half of German goth act Untoten – but very different from it. This particular album is strangely "bilingual", i.e. German and English bits alternate – or rather: intermingle.
  
A specific stylistic element is the inclusion of sound snippets from films, hence English song lyrics are complemented by German film soundbites in the background. For listeners who don't understand German it could still be a cool stylistic element (also as the mood of what is being said is pretty clear without the words' semantics, as it were).
  
It plays with clichés a lot – and thus includes a subtle undercurrent of humour too! The music is electronic, often difficult to categorize, but mostly very, very dark indeed.
  
The track "Painting the dead" alone makes it qualify for this list, but there are others of a decidedly gloomy atmosphere, some more abrasive, others more sentimental, but never without a very individual weirdness about it. Not for everyone, mind you, but I find it quite magical.
