Sighet Prison

A former prison in the north of Romania. Especially in the early days of the communist era, political prisoners, members of the former elite and clergy were incarcerated here under appalling conditions. The prison was closed in 1977.
Today it houses one of Romania's most important museums about the period and about the whole topic of persecution during the communist era in the Eastern Bloc and about the Cold War. The site's full official name is the "Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance". It's part of a larger project and the counterpart of the "International Centre for the Study of Communism" in Bucharest.
Opening times: daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (from April to October, shorter opening times and closed on Mondays altogether during the winter season).
Location: The Sighet Prison memorial & museum is located in the very far north of Romania, in the town of Sighet Marmartiei near the country's borders with Hungary and Ukraine (i.e. it was then only a stone's throw away from the territory of the Soviet Union).
