Lists

Many people like rankings, league tables, top-10 lists and other such attempts at ordering – and I am no exception. Some may take issue with ranking things that are so dark in nature (see e.g. Chuck Thompson's books on WWII sites). But I find it quite legitimate, especially with a view to giving a quick overview of the most prototypical sites in the world of dark tourism, wherever they may be geographically and regardless of their categories.

So here we go, I offer the following alternative lists, all of them more or less tentative and not unlikely to be changed or re-ordered from time to time.

- top 20 dark tourist sites in the world overall

- top 10 dark tourism sites ordered by degree of darkness

- personal top 10 darkest tourist experiences

- top 10 dark tourism sites by (estimated) popularity

- top 10 dark-themed museums

- top 10 most exotic/remote dark tourism sites

- top 10 most rewarding countries for the dark tourist
