Bad Sachsa border land museum
- darkometer rating: 3 -A small museum on the theme of the former "Iron Curtain" border between East Germany (GDR) and West Germany.
This is only an indoor museum – and it is not located on the actual border strip. However, it has a fair collection of the usual paraphernalia of uniforms, bits of border fence, various signs, medals, etc. and parts of a balloon used for a (failed) attempt at fleeing to the West. The "highlight" may be the reconstructed interior of a border guard command post – complete with a simulated alarm sound track …
Opening times: restricted: Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday noon to 5 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. 5 p.m.
Admission: 4 EUR (under 17-year-olds 3.50EUR)
Location: in the hamlet Tettenborn, near Neuhof, a few miles south of Bad Sachsa in Lower Saxony, Germany. Coming from the A7 motorway, take the B243 trunk road towards Nordhausen, just south of the exit for Bad Sachsa turn off the B243 at the next exit near Nuexei (L603) and drive east into Tettenborn. The museum (signposted "Grenzlandmuseum") is near the end of the village. It is housed in the local community centre. A black-red-and-yellow border marker post signals the museum clearly enough.
