This is a small alternative tour operator based in London and run by the enthusiastic and likeable Evan Panagopoulos. I haven’t actually used him as a tour guide myself yet, but I know him personally and have every confidence in the quality of what he will deliver – and online reviews corroborate that. He certainly knows his stuff – I’ve also been following his Blog and his often long and elaborate posts are certainly well researched and presented. And all that also feeds into his tours.

  

In London Evan leads regular architecture walking tours (with brutalism his prime speciality). But he also organizes and accompanies longer small group trips outside the UK: to Greece, Finland and Poland.

The prime pick of his tours must be the “Forgotten Greece” tour, nine or ten days mostly off the beaten track and taking in plenty of dark tourism along the way. Being of Greek extraction, Evan is of course well placed for such a tour of his original home country. His tour company would certainly be my first port of call if I were planning a trip to Greece (which I really should do – it’s quite a gap).

  

Another country he leads tours (or rather “expeditions”, as he calls it) to is Finland, the home country of his wife, and hence often visited. Here the focus of the ten-day programme is both architecture (in Helsinki) and then sites of Finland’s rich war history, from the Civil War, the Winter War, Continuation War & WWII, as well as the Cold War. So again, plenty of dark stuff included. I haven’t covered Finland on this website yet, but if I wanted to change that, taking Evan’s tour of the country would be my first move.

   

A third tour of relevance to us here is Evan’s six-day “Poland Is Not Yet Lost” tour. This tour does not cover all of Poland but is based in Krakow, and includes that city’s prime dark sites – but also an excursion to Katowice (focusing on socialist architecture) and, most importantly from a dark-tourism perspective, a half-day visit to Auschwitz, arguably the No. 1 dark site in the whole world (see this list).
