Beyond dark tourism proper
Since the whole concept of dark tourism has rather fuzzy edges, comes in various categories and also overlaps with other forms of tourism to varying degrees, it's not surprising to find that there's no general agreement as to what is still part of dark tourism and what may go beyond the scope of this concept.
A few tricky borderline cases notwithstanding, the following are categories that the author of this website considers NOT to be dark tourism proper, and these will thus not be covered here in any great detail – why not is explained for each case separately in these entries:
- battlefield tourism (in particular in the form of battle re-enactments)
- "Dungeons" (amusement-park-like commercial exhibitions)
- 'Dialogue in the Dark' (experiencing the world of blindness)
- paranormal tourism (e.g. haunted houses or sites of alleged UFO sightings)
- fictional dark places (e.g. horror-movie film sets)
- danger tourism (involving putting one's own life at risk)
- slum tourism (or "poverty tourism", ogling at the misery of others)
