A unique aviation museum near Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden, housed in a former air force base in an underground hangar hewn into the rocks of a mountain for protection – very reminiscent of the abandoned rock airbases of the Balkans (see especially Željava in Croatia). Here, however, the site has been fully commodified for tourism purposes and the tunnels are filled with various exhibitions.

A particular focus is on the Cold War era, with special subsections about nuclear weapons, civil defence, espionage, the Stasi and several other topics. Amongst the large exhibits are about two dozen aircraft, including in particular modern Swedish fighter jets like the legendary Saab “Draken” and “Viggen” planes (several versions) as well as the current Saab “Gripen”.

Some exhibits are hands-on, including a flight simulator, and there are also a few items outside on open-air display.

The location is authentic – one of five rock hangars built for the Swedish air force during the early phases of the Cold War in the 1950s. It was converted into the present museum site in 2005.

Location: at the former Säve airport, ca. 10 miles (15 km) north-west of Gothenburg city centre; best reached by car, though there are also bus connections from the city (line 35). Address: Nya bergets väg 50, 41746 Göteborg
